Anal Itching: Why Is It Happening and How to Prevent It or Stop It
Anal itching is this intolerable urge that is just impossible to ignore. You reach over and down your butt and began scratching to ease the itch. It is embarrassing for sure but you just can’t help it!
So what is it?
The itching is irritation of the skin in the anal area. It often times is an indication of an inflammation. This irritation is caused by chemicals from the food we eat, including spices, hot sauce, peppers, coffee, milk products, tomatoes and tomato products, and nuts.
The itching can also be because of excessive moisture caused by perspiration, diarrhea, or fecal incontinence. Moisture increases the likelihood of bacterial infection. Yeast can also proliferate with moisture, especially in individuals on antibiotic therapy.
Some other causes of itching are hemorrhoids, anal abrasion or fissures, skin disorders such as psoriasis or parasites like pinworms.
Anal itching, called pruritus ani, is a general problem but is most common in people who have diabetes mellitus or HIV. It is usually a temporary problem but it can be persistent that it becomes bothersome.
The good news is that home remedies are available to help you manage the itching. There are also available over-the counter medications that are indicated for this problem. Do not feel ashamed about asking your healthcare provider about it.
The initial treatment for anal itching is directed toward relieving the burning and soreness of the affected area. This can be achieved by washing the anal area properly and avoid irritants. Perform meticulous cleansing of the anal region in the morning, at night and especially after bowel movement. Do not scrub harshly and avoid strong soaps. Instead, use unscented, moist tissue wipes or cotton balls moistened with water. Dry thoroughly with tissue paper or a hair dryer may even be used.
The itching may cause an intolerable desire to scratch but attempt not to! Scratching further irritates the skin leading to inflammation. If you cannot tolerate the itch, try to apply a cold compress to the affected area for an immediate relief. You can also try a lukewarm bath to relive the itching. Busy yourself so you do not think much about it. Other irritants that may aggravate the itching includes bubble baths, genital deodorants and scented powder. Avoid these as much as possible.
A change in lifestyle, especially diet is key to prevent anal itching. Cut back on foods that may irritate the skin such as spices, carbonated beverages and caffeine products. Avoid overuse of laxatives too, since stool residue may irritate the skin. Wear cotton underwear and loose clothing to allow sweat to evaporate. This helps keep the perianal area dry. Wearing tight clothing’s such as pantyhose may trap moisture, which causes skin irritation.
If anal itching becomes severe and is persistent, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider. This may be related to a skin condition or a deeper problem that would require medical treatment. The doctor can prescribe medications such as hydrocortisone cream or an antihistamine. Follow instructions carefully and you will soon say goodbye to this embarrassing problem.
